YOUTUBE & COMMERCIAL USE · UPDATED OCTOBER 22, 2026
Can I Use ElevenLabs Free for YouTube?
Yes for permitted non-commercial videos, with the required attribution. No for monetized or other commercial videos. ElevenLabs Free does not include a commercial license. For ads, sponsorships, affiliate promotions or client work, generate the final voiceover during an eligible paid subscription.

Choose the line that matches what you will publish:
- Private voice tests or draft scripts: stay on Free.
- Public, genuinely non-commercial video: Free can be suitable with the required title attribution.
- Monetized, sponsored, affiliate, product or client work: use an eligible paid plan and generate the final audio while that subscription is active.
- Final audio already made on Free: upgrading does not license that file; regenerate the final version after upgrading.
Starter is currently the lowest-priced listed paid tier with a commercial license at a standard monthly price of $6. Stay on Free until commercial rights or another paid feature is the real blocker; do not buy Creator only because it is marked as popular.
Buying a voice license does not guarantee YouTube monetization. It covers eligible audio use; your channel and videos still need to meet YouTube's own requirements.
The commercial-use answer at a glance
| Situation | Can you use the audio commercially? | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| Generated on ElevenLabs Free | No | Use only for testing or permitted non-commercial sharing with required attribution |
| Generated while on an eligible paid plan | Yes, generally | Keep records of the plan and generation date; follow the applicable terms |
| Generated on Free, then you upgrade | Not retroactively | Regenerate the final audio while the paid plan is active |
| Generated while paid, then you cancel | Yes, rights continue | Download and archive the final files before cancelling |
| Generated with a Beta Service | Not for commercial use | Check the service-specific terms before publishing |
Free-plan audio
Use for testing or permitted non-commercial sharing with required attribution. It has no commercial license.
Paid-plan audio
Eligible audio generated while paid can be used commercially, subject to the applicable terms and your rights to the material.
Free audio, then an upgrade
The upgrade does not license the earlier file. Regenerate the final voiceover during the paid subscription.
Paid audio, then cancellation
Qualifying audio keeps its commercial license. Download and archive your final files before cancelling.
Beta Services
Beta output cannot be used commercially. Check the product-specific terms before publishing.
Can I use ElevenLabs Free on a non-monetized YouTube channel?
It can be suitable if the use is genuinely non-commercial and complies with ElevenLabs’ terms. For Free-plan narration, the help center requires attribution in the title using elevenlabs.io or 11.ai.
Turning off YouTube ads does not by itself make a video non-commercial. A sponsored video, product advertisement, affiliate promotion or paid client deliverable still serves a commercial purpose. If that describes your project, use eligible paid-plan audio instead.
Can you monetize a YouTube video made with ElevenLabs Free?
ElevenLabs’ official help center states that Free-plan output cannot be used for any commercial purpose. A monetized YouTube channel is a commercial use because the content can generate advertising, affiliate, sponsorship, product, or service revenue.
That means the safest workflow is not to publish the Free-plan narration and hope that a future upgrade fixes the license. Use Free to test the voice, pronunciation, pacing, and script. Once the narration is final, subscribe to an eligible paid plan and generate a fresh final file.
The license does not replace your other obligations. You still need the necessary rights to the script, voice, music, images, trademarks, and other material in the finished project. You must also follow ElevenLabs’ Terms of Service, Prohibited Use Policy, and any Service-Specific Terms.
Does a later upgrade cover old Free-plan audio?
No. ElevenLabs distinguishes content generated during a paid subscription from content generated outside one. The important event is when the audio was generated—not whether your account is paid when the video is uploaded.
A practical production sequence is:
- Draft and test short samples on Free.
- Lock the final script, voice, pronunciation, and pacing.
- Start the smallest paid plan that covers the required feature and usage.
- Regenerate the final commercial audio during that subscription.
- Save the audio, invoice or receipt, plan details, and generation date together.
This costs less than subscribing before the script is ready and reduces licensing ambiguity later.
What happens if you cancel ElevenLabs?
ElevenLabs says audio generated during an eligible paid subscription keeps its commercial license after the subscription ends. Cancellation therefore does not remove the commercial license from qualifying work you already generated while paid.
However, cancellation affects what happens next. New audio generated after the paid period ends falls outside that paid subscription. Unused credits can also expire after cancellation, and ElevenLabs does not guarantee that generated content will remain stored forever on the Free tier.
Which ElevenLabs plan should a commercial creator buy?
As checked on October 21, 2026, ElevenLabs lists these standard monthly prices and credit allowances:
- Free: $0, 10,000 credits, no commercial license.
- Starter: $6 per month, 30,000 credits, commercial license and Instant Voice Cloning.
- Creator: $22 per month, 121,000 credits and Professional Voice Cloning.
First-month promotions can differ from the recurring price. Check the current checkout offer, renewal price and taxes before subscribing; the figures above are standard monthly prices, not a promise of a discount.
For a creator making a first monetized project, Starter is the lowest-cost listed entry point with a commercial license. Creator becomes more rational when Starter’s approximate 30 minutes of text-to-speech capacity, voice features, or other limits block a repeatable workflow.

Commercial-use checklist before publishing
- Was the final audio generated during an eligible paid subscription?
- Was a Beta Service involved?
- Do you own or have permission to use the script and source material?
- Do you have permission to use the selected or cloned voice?
- Does the finished project comply with applicable law and platform rules?
- Have you saved a local copy and basic generation records?
If any answer is unclear, pause publication and check the current official terms. Product labels and plan features can change faster than old tutorials.
Final verdict
Use ElevenLabs Free to evaluate the workflow, not to produce the final narration for monetized work. For commercial content, generate the final audio on the smallest eligible paid plan that removes your actual constraint.
The cleanest low-cost rule is: test on Free, finalize while paid, archive the evidence, and keep the original terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use ElevenLabs Free for YouTube?
Yes for permitted non-commercial videos with the required attribution. No for monetized or other commercial videos; generate that final audio during an eligible paid subscription.
Does upgrading ElevenLabs later license audio created on Free?
No. Upgrading does not retroactively license the old file. Generate a new final voiceover during the eligible paid subscription.
What is the cheapest ElevenLabs plan with commercial rights?
As checked on October 21, 2026, Starter is the lowest-priced listed paid tier with a commercial license. Its standard monthly price is $6; introductory offers, taxes and checkout eligibility can differ.
Can I publish ElevenLabs Free audio if I give attribution?
For permitted non-commercial narration, include elevenlabs.io or 11.ai in the title as required by the help center. Attribution does not turn Free output into commercially licensed content.
Can I use ElevenLabs Starter for client work?
Starter currently includes a commercial license. You must still comply with ElevenLabs’ terms and hold the necessary rights to every part of the project.
Can I keep monetizing a video after cancelling?
ElevenLabs says qualifying content generated during the paid subscription retains its commercial license after cancellation.
Should I upgrade before testing a voice?
Usually not. Test voice fit and short drafts on Free, then regenerate the approved final narration while paid.

This is a practical buying guide, not legal advice. Licensing and plan details were checked against ElevenLabs’ official pages on October 21, 2026 and may change. The page update on October 22 only introduced a first-party redirect to the same approved referral destination; it did not change the licensing verdict or pricing facts.
